fun with balut

i am a big fan of the travel network. they have a lot of great shows with great hosts and it is all about a subject i enjoy... traveling. one of my personal favorite shows is bizarre foods with andrew zimmern. for those who have never tuned in, the show is nothing more then cameras following a funny little chef around the world while he eats the most unusual, or bizarre as the case may be, foods. it is good fun, they always go to interesting places and each episode is usually worth at least one good gross out. at any rate, one of the things old andrew indulged in while in asia was something call balut. balut is the name given to fertilized eggs, in this case duck eggs. apparently as common of a snack as pretzels in some places, the balut is essentially a hard boiled egg with a baby duck instead of a yoke. fast forward to the photos below, a trip to the asian market here in cleveland and a misconception that a prerequisite for being balut was being hard boiled...

and yes that is an eye and a beak you are looking at... remember, being balut does not have anything to do with being hard boiled.
